HARRISONBURG — James Madison sophomore tight end Nick Carlton will miss the rest of the season, coach Mike Houston said Tuesday.

“Nick’s done for the year. He’s having surgery [today],” Houston said. “He has a knee injury they have to fix.”

Carlton started four of the first six games this season while serving as the primary replacement for senior starting tight end Jonathan Kloosterman, who was suspended for the first two contests this year and missed two more due to an illness.

Carlton recorded six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. His 17-yard scoring catch in the season opener at FBS East Carolina gave the Dukes a two-touchdown lead in the final minute of the third quarter.

“He should be fine maybe for spring practice or at the very least for the summer,” Houston said.

This marks the fifth season-ending injury the team has had to deal with this year. Offensive lineman Tyree Chavious (Achilles) and cornerback Charles Tutt (ACL) were lost before the start of the regular season. Running back Cardon Johnson (Achilles), offensive lineman Gerren Butler (ACL) and Carlton have all been lost in-season.

Earlier this month, Houston said linebacker Dimitri Holloway (foot) could also miss the rest of this year depending on his recovery and rehab.
