HARRISONBURG — His decision to take an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend likely means Rome (Ga.) quarterback Knox Kadum won’t sign with James Madison come Wednesday.

Kadum committed to the Dukes this past Sunday ahead of Wednesday's signing day for the recruiting class of 2019.

On Friday, Kadum told the Daily News-Record he let first-year JMU coach Curt Cignetti know about his plans to take a trip to Blacksburg. Kadum said Cignetti then opted to move in another direction.

“I definitely had it open in case I didn’t like Virginia Tech,” Kadum said. “So it was disappointing to hear that, but I have to understand his position this close to signing day.”

Cignetti can’t comment on any unsigned prospects due to NCAA rules.

Virginia Tech became the second Power Five school to offer Kadum when it did this past Wednesday — only three days after he initially pledged to JMU. Kadum holds a mix of FBS and FCS scholarship offers from 16 different schools including his other Power Five offer from Rutgers, and ones from Charlotte and Florida Atlantic which he said he considered most before he decided to commit to Madison earlier in the week.

At Rome, Kadum helped the Wolves win two state titles during his run as a four-year starter. He compiled a 49-6 record while throwing for 7,400 yards, rushing for 2,414 yards and registering 118 total touchdowns in the 55 games.

In recent weeks, former Virginia Tech quarterbacks Josh Jackson and Hendon Hooker have entered the NCAA’s transfer portal leaving the Hokies with only two scholarship signal-callers on their roster.

Kadum said there’s a chance he could play earlier in college if he signs with Virginia Tech.

“It sounds like a strong possibility because they are unhappy with the two quarterbacks left,” Kadum said.

JMU has three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster and all three — Ben DiNucci, Cole Johnson and Gage Moloney — saw action last season. DiNucci threw for 2,275 yards, rushed for 433 yards and tallied 25 total touchdowns as the team’s starter this past fall.
